About Casa de la Espiga

Step behind the stone walls of Casa de la Espiga and experience a different place in time.

Just minutes by foot from the Jardin (San Miguel's main plaza), this historic Spanish Colonial home dates back to 1717 A.D. Lovingly restored by the current owners over the past 13 years, this three-bedroom-plus villa now relives its original grandeur - and then some.

For 50 years prior to its recent restoration, Casa de la Espiga was home to a local bakery - hence its name, which translates as "House of the Wheat Grain Flower."

The location is ideal, in the heart of San Miguel's historic "Theater District." Lush courtyard gardens, surrounded by original stone walls and gracefully arched columns, lead to the interior rooms on the ground floor, affording the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living. Relax, dine or entertain your guests in the two private patios, taking advantage of San Miguel's nearly perfect climate.

Or, if you prefer, settle cozily indoors in the elegant yet comfortable "sala" in front of the hand-carved cantera limestone fireplace, or take your meals in the formal domed dining room.

Two well-appointed ground-level bedrooms - one with king bed and sitting room and the other with queen bed and library loft, each with its own full bathroom - are accessible from the courtyard as well. A charming powder room and the kitchen are also located on the ground level.

On the second level, the more rustic art studio opens onto the expansive, sun-drenched roof terraces with views of the town's stunning skyline and mountain sunsets. This is the perfect place for taking the sun on the lounge chairs during the day, or for sipping your evening cocktails as you watch the sun slip behind the Santa Rosa Mountains toward Guanajuato.

While the main house of Casa de la Espiga is intended as a rental for 1-4 people in the two main ground-level bedrooms, the double futon in the studio can serve as an additional bedroom, with its adjoining spacious bathroom with shower and over-sized tub.

For a party of 5-6 guests, the adjacent casita guesthouse with its sitting room, kitchenette and third-floor queen bedroom/bathroom may be used to provide three main bedrooms. ** Please note: The casita is always included in the rental of Casa de la Espiga for your total privacy, regardless of the number of guests.

Rental prices, thus, would be calculated this way:

For 1-2 guests
Weekly rate: $1950 USD
Monthly rate: $6500 USD

For 3-4 guests
Weekly rate: $2500 USD
Monthly rate: $7500 USD

For 5-6 guests
Weekly rate: $2950 USD
Monthly rate: $8200 USD

This exceptional home has been tastefully furnished throughout with antiques, Mexican handicrafts and the owners' personal collection of original art and artifacts from around the world.

Colorful Mexican tiles line the walls of the large, fully equipped kitchen, where indigenous ceramics and eclectic market paintings are whimsically displayed.

Cable TV with U.S. stations, a surround-sound music system, and a library of books, videos and CDs are also provided for your enjoyment. High-speed Internet connection is provided "gratis" for your own laptop.

Casa de la Espiga has a wonderful full-time staff who utterly exude the "warmth of Mexico." Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to noon, Josefina is there to maintain the household and look after your every need. Best of all, her memorable Mexican recipes rival those of any restaurant in San Miguel - and she LOVES to cook - a real "Like Water for Chocolate" experience! Monday to Friday from 9 am to 2 pm, Tomas tends to the garden and outdoor spaces, and will cheerfully help out wherever he is needed. Both staff members make it their job to be sure that you feel pampered throughout your stay.

Casa de la Espiga is not just a home - it's a total Mexican experience!
