About Casa Aldama
Architecture buffs and fans of modern Mexican minimalism, this is for you!
Casa Aldama offers the unique opportunity to stay in a newly constructed contemporary home designed and furnished by the internationally acclaimed architectural team of Legorreta y Legorreta, headed by reknowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. Legorreta is famous for his signature use of space, light, water and color, all incorporating Latin American traditions of privacy and simplicity.
This three-bedroom modern masterpiece is located in the historic Centro of San Miguel on one of the finest streets of town, just 2.5 level blocks from the Jardin.
Controversial to say the least, the construction of this contemporary villa in the heart of the colonial town raised some eyebrows, yet few can discern what's behind the plaster walls and stone-framed doors when viewing Casa Aldama from the streetfront.
But step inside and one enters a world of angles and shadows, bold colors and rushing water features, a sanctuary of quiet simplicity and great open spaces - all in startling contrast to the ancient town that surrounds it.
Casa Aldama is well-appointed for 3 couples or other traveling parties of up to 6 adults (no children or pets, please).
The master bedroom suite, with king bed, has a teak-lined library nook and fireplace, plus glass-paneled Juliette balcony overlooking the pool terrace and expansive garden below.
There is an adjoining master bathroom with both tub and shower, double sinks and dressing room and a daybed.
The second guest room, also with king bed and fireplace, has a desk and en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower. This bedroom has its own television.
The third guest room, with two twin beds, has a tub with combined shower, built-in office alcove, gas fireplace, and a large south-facing terrace with patio furniture.
All bedrooms are located on the second floor and are equipped with electric wall heaters, daytime and evening pull-down shades and in-wall, high-speed Internet cable access.
The master bedroom also has a stereo CD/radio/tape player.
On the ground floor, the living spaces flow into one another, complemented by sliding glass doors that disappear into the walls.
The entrance hall has a side lobby for coats (and a safe for guests' use) as well as the powder room.
The central patio is graced by a large tree and an elegant stone table and benches.
A cascading fountain/waterfall runs down the main staircase facing this patio, and the water theme is repeated again by a running fountain in the central patio that wraps around one side of the exterior of the main sala.
This main living/seating area, accented by a modern cone fireplace, also has an entertainment center with television, DVD, VCR and CD player with built-in speakers in the living room and also outside on the terrace. There is also a Vonage phone for free calls back to the U.S. and Canada, as well as to the rest of the world.
The adjoining two-story dining room has a wood-burning fireplace and glass doors that open out to the covered terrace ('sala abierta'), which also has an open fireplace and a dining area with seating for 6.
The covered terrace becomes an open terrace, with steps leading down to the swimming pool and with yet another fountain flowing into it, creating the wonderfully soothing sound of splashing water.
A changing room with bathroom for swimmers is located one level below the pool terrace, near the garden path that leads out onto the lovely lawns and beds full of lush plantings.
Atop it all is a lovely roof terrace with arbor, cacti gardens and fantastic views all over the town and countryside. You'll come up here for evening cocktails to admire the night lighting on the Parroquia church. A painter's studio with easel and sink is also located on the roof terrace.
